Early Beginnings and Development of Poker

The origin of poker is a matter of some debate. The name of this game likely came from the French poque, which came from German pochen which means "to knock". The games having those names do not prove whether poker was adapted from them however. The Persian sailors probably taught the French in New Orleans the game, nabs which is very similar to poker. It is also believed that the game was based on the Renaissance game of primero and the French brelan. These games are known to influence the development of poker as played today.

Joseph Crowell, an English actor said that the game was played in New Orleans in the year 1829, with the deck of twenty cards, the four players is betting on which player's hand was the most valuable. In the book entitled An Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling, authored by Jonathan H. Green, described the spread of the game from there to the rest of the country by Mississippi riverboats, which gambling is the common pastime.

Soon after the game was popularized, the full English deck with 52 cards in England was utilized, and the flush was introduced. During the American Civil War there were many changes to the game including draw poker, stud poker and the straight. Other developments followed between the 1870's and the 1950's. Many other countries mostly in Asia adapted the game through the U.S. Military.

Tournaments which are described as modern plays became popular in American casinos after the World Series of Poker began, in 1970. During that time strategy books were published namely, Super/System by Doyle Brunson, The Book of Tells by Mike Caro and The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky

Poker's popularity had an unprecedented development in the first years of the 21st century, which turned the game into a spectator sport. This is all because of the introduction of online poker and the invention of the hole-card camera. Viewers could now follow the action and drama of the game.

The World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour brought in huge audiences for cable and satellite TV distributors. Poker fans all over the world are joining into expensive tournaments for a chance to play with the poker pros. There was an increase in exposure due to the cameras as it also brought a newer dimension to the poker professionals game - their actions have now been realized for more accountability as it later aired on television.

The popularity of the online-satellite qualifier tournaments contributed to the fast development of major poker tournaments as well.
